Hazel House

Hazel House

Architect: Richard L. Doyle

Hazel House was designed by local architect Richard Doyle for his good friend and philanthropist William Rutherford, named in honor of Rutherford’s wife and collaborator Hazel Rutherford.

The three reshaped the Greater Peoria region and protected its incomparable wilderness for future generations by harnessing their own optimism, talents, vision and resources in elevating the region’s innovative spirit.

The house realizes a beautiful united vision of the practical and the aesthetic that flows from the interior out into its natural setting.

The open floor plan, vaulted wood ceiling, and large exposed cross beams give it a rustic feel. The house integrates the outdoors through the use of glass walls and ample patio space that is easily accessible through sliding doors.

The central spiral staircase connects each level, with an open stairwell allowing light and air to flow throughout the whole house.

Hazel House is truly a masterpiece of modern design.
